As we commemorate World Book Day today, let's embark on a journey through the pages of some of my all-time favourite books. These literary treasures have not only captivated my imagination but have also left an indelible mark on my heart. From the enchanting realms of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth to the witty landscapes of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, to the thought-provoking narrative of R.F. Kuang's "Babel/The Necessity of Violence," each book holds a special place in my literary repertoire.
A Journey Through Middle-earth:
On this World Book Day, I find myself reminiscing about the timeless adventures that unfolded in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" series have been constant companions throughout my life, transporting me to a world filled with hobbits, elves, dwarves, and the epic struggle against the forces of darkness. Tolkien's rich imagination and masterful storytelling have not only ignited my love for fantasy but have also instilled in me a sense of wonder and awe for the power of imagination.
An Ode to Humour and Wisdom
During my university days, Terry Pratchett's Witches series became my go-to refuge from the stresses of academic life. Set in the whimsical world of Discworld, these books follow the misadventures of Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick as they navigate the complexities of magic and life. Pratchett's sharp wit and keen observations about human nature never fail to bring a smile to my face, making each book in the series a joyous exploration of humour, wisdom, and the absurdities of existence.
A Modern Masterpiece
Among the recent additions to my list of favourite books is R.F. Kuang's "Babel/The Necessity of Violence." This gripping tale delves into the complexities of power, morality, and the human condition, challenging readers to confront uncomfortable truths about academia, racism, violence and their consequences. Kuang's compelling narrative and thought-provoking themes have made this book an essential addition to my yearly reading list, sparking introspection and stimulating conversations long after the final page is turned.
My TBR
R.F. Kuang’s latest release, "Yellowface" marks her fifth literary endeavour, building upon the success of her previous works and is the next book on my TRB (to be read) list for 2024. Following the acclaim of her fantasy novel "Babel/ The Necessity of Violence" which soared to the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and earned recognition as one of Blackwell’s Books of the Year for Fiction, Kuang continues to solidify her position as a prominent voice in the fantasy genre. Kuang's literary prowess has been further recognized with accolades including the Crawford Award and the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel, cementing her status as a luminary in the world of speculative fiction.
As we celebrate World Book Day, I am reminded of the profound impact that books have had on my life. From the fantastical realms of Tolkien's Middle-earth to the comforting yet satirical landscapes of Pratchett's Discworld, to the provocative narrative of Kuang's "Babel/The Necessity of Violence," each book has enriched my understanding of the world and expanded the horizons of my imagination. On this special day, let us pay tribute to the transformative power of literature and the boundless adventures that await within the pages of our favourite books.
